Desalination is an important new water source for Sydney.
To help make the desalination plant as low impact as possible, it will be 100% powered by renewable energy.
A new 67-turbine wind farm is being built at Bungendore, near Queanbeyan, which will supply renewable energy to the national electricity grid to offset power used to operate the plant.
The wind farm can supply more than enough energy to power the plant and will increase the supply of renewable energy in NSW by more than 700%. It will keep supplying renewable energy to the grid even if the desalination plant is not running.
Find out more in the 2008 Progress Report or by visiting the Sydney Water website, where you can also view short animations of how the plant will be powered by renewable energy.
