As part of the 2006 Metropolitan Water Plan, the NSW Government is pursuing water recycling wherever it is feasible and practical. This will increase recycling to 70 billion litres a year 2015 with plans to increase this to 100 billion litres by about 2032.
The graph to the right shows the proposed increases in recycling up to the year 2015. Click on the graph to view a full size version.
The next steps to increase recycling are to:
- continue construction of the extended Rouse Hill scheme, and complete similar schemes currently under construction at Ropes Crossing and Hoxton Park
- provide recycled water to all the 180,000 new homes in Sydney's north-west and south-west
- complete the new recycled water scheme to supply large industrial users in the Rosehill-Camellia area
- construct the new scheme to substitute for Warragamba Dam releases with up to 18 billion litres of highly treated recycled water a year
- continue to support cost effective local-scale recycling and stormwater projects across the greater Sydney region
- increase the supply of recycled water to established areas of Sydney
- finalise NSW Government funding for the Caltex and Continental Carbon project at Kurnell so this project can proceed.
