Sydney farmers produce a wide range of fresh produce for local consumption. Crops such as field and greenhouse vegetables, dairy products, flowers, turf and fruit trees have an estimated farm gate value of at least $450 million and provide significant employment benefits.
By improving water efficiency on farms it is possible to reduce overall water use by up to 25 per cent which will improve river health, save money and help reduce pressure on drinking water supplies.
The state-wide program of Water Smart Farm extension and education services, including the WaterWise on the Farm initiative, incorporates education, training and community awareness activities. It is run by the NSW Department of Primary Industries and successfully assists farmers to improve their water efficiency while maximising the yield from irrigated crops and pastures.
To promote efficient water use, the NSW Government is rolling out a metering program and supporting the expansion of a transparent and efficient water trading market. The metering program and water trading opportunities will be enhanced through implementation of a water sharing plan in 2008.
The NSW Government has undertaken detailed planning for the construction and operation of a major Western Sydney Recycled Water Initiative. A long term aim of this initiative is to maximise the use of recycled water for agricultural industries.
