Since 1999, Sydney has reduced its annual demand for drinking water by about 76 billion litres a year through wise water use. This is a great effort.

However, it is important that we don’t become complacent and continue to use water efficiently water, in and around the home.

You can help reduce the amount of water you use in your home and garden by getting involved and taking advantage of the following rebates, offers and ideas:

• let Sydney Water replace your single-flush toilet* with a 4-star, water efficient, dual flush toilet
• compare your household's water savings with Sydney Water's targets for water efficient households
• install a water efficient showerhead* which could save your household around $50 to $100 in water and energy costs every year
• fit a tap aerator to your taps to reduce the amount of water you use
• get a free Water Saving Kit*, which could save around nine buckets of water a day
• get a greywater reuse system installed, which can replace drinking water for watering gardens and lawns
• receive a rebate of $150 when you purchase a water efficient washing machine with at least a 4.5 star water efficiency rating*
• receive a rebate of up to $1,500 to install a rainwater tank* in Sydney or across NSW in an existing home
• register for Sydney Water's Love Your Garden* service, and a qualified horticulturist will evaluate your garden's watering needs
• learn more about water efficient gardening with a new interactive web tool, WaterRight Gardens
• get a plumber to install a water efficient showerhead and fix your leaking taps for just $22 as part of the WaterFix* program
• look for the water efficiency rating when buy new indoor or outdoor products.

You can also get involved by educating others with a range of resources available on the Water Education Resource Hub. The Water for Life Education Program is also implementing a range of projects to engage householders in taking steps to save water, including projects with non English speaking background communities.
